Difference between POP and IMAP

POP and IMAP both allow clients to access their Email from server.

However, It is important to understand the basic differences between the various connection protocols of Emails, So that you can choose the one that you need.

POP

When using Post Office Protocol(POP), all the Emails are downloaded from the Mail Server and saved in your local system and usually (but not always) deletes the email from the Email server.Your Emails can only be accessed from one computer/device as Email are deleted from Mail server after downloading on your local system. It can appear that mail is missing or disappearing from your Inbox if you try to check your mail from a different computer or Webmail.

Pros
  • Mail always available on your local computer/device for offline consultation.
Cons
  • Sent Items content is available on local system ONLY (no copy exists on the mailserver)
  • Speed of mail download depends on bandwidth (large attachments may take some time).

IMAP

Internet Message Access Protocol (IMAP) is the better and the recommended option as it allows client to Sync their Email on multiple devices like laptop,smartphone and other mobile device.When you check your Email, your computer contacts the Mail Server to show you the new Incoming Mail.

Pros
  • Incoming E-Mails are always available on multiple computers/smartphone or WebMail.
Cons
  • Sent Items content is available on local system ONLY (no copy exists on the mailserver)
